Finding the right psychic for you
57Avoiding cons, misinformation and wasting money
The consultation of psychics, mystics, prophets all go way back in time. Many famous people have used them to make important decisions and still do. Some psychics have been highly regarded, while others have been punished severely for their gifts. Psychics have also gotten a bad reputation because of con artists and people claiming to be more than they are. This is unfortunate for the authentic spiritual guides who can offer you the help and reassurance you need at times in your life.
As a reader, who has worked with other psychics in the business, I would like to offer you some advice on picking a psychic that is right for you. This is based on my personal experience, as always trust yourself first and foremost on this topic. Just because you have never done it before, doesn't mean you are unable to make good decisions on this. Consider it similar to selecting a doctor, just because you don't know medicine don't mean you can be wise about your decisions.
1. Ask around
Some people are embarrased to ask their friends about psychics, because they think they are alone in their curiosity. There are several studies out there that check into the common belief in this area. One survey reports "Three in four Americans believe in the Paranormal." 1 This means you probably know someone who has tried out a psychic, or at least knows someone who has. Ask around. Find out who other people have tried. Get referrals from people you trust.
2. Ask for testimonials
If you can get a recommendation from a friend, great, but still ask for testimonials. Check their website for comments or ask for refences. Some psychics even show up on standard review sites such as www.yelp.com. If you get a recommendation, see if you can find reviews out there for this person.
3. Trust your gut
If you call someone and you just don't get a good feeling from them, don't make an appointment. Find someone else that does resonate with you. Some psychics will let you end a reading at no charge (within reason of course) if you feel they aren't connecting with you in the reading itself. Ask ahead of time about thier policy regarding this matter.
4. Check out the local fairs
Many readers work at fairs for a discounted rate, where they do quicker, sample readings. If you are nervous, ask the psychic if they are reading anywhere near by on this level. It might also just be a great place to go and sample a few readers at a time to get your feet wet. It doesn't have to be a metaphysical fair. A lot of local street fairs will have readers with their own booth.
5. Avoid "subscription" services
Any psychic who claims that you have to come back over and over again to remove negative energy, a curse, or something similar is probably not legit. It may be beneficial to return more than once if their offer healings of some sort, but it should not be a requirement for seeing the benefits.
6. Don't expect a quick fix or all of the answers.
You are where you are meant to be. If someone can support you where you are at, great. But don't expect anyone to "fix" it for you. If they claim they can, I would be skeptical. Psychics are a support system for your well-being, just like anything else. Short of some of the very special, famous healers, I have not met anyone who can just take it all away for you. You life is a journey, you are meant to be on. No one has all of the answers of what that means for you. Psychics, readers, etc. can only support you and give you guidance on what would be most supportive of your journey. I am skeptical of anyone who says "99% accurate" as things are always shifting and free will is always at play. I am not saying these people claiming this accuracy are lying, but I would just ask them how they have come to this conclusion. (of course if you are one of those people, please comment and share with us)
Going to a psychic can be a fun and releasing experience. It should be a positive experience, not something scary or manipulating. If you feel awkward in any way, that is your clue, something isn't right. Trust it. But don't let it keep you from trying it out. It can be a very rewarding engagement. Good luck! Please share your experiences in the comments if you have more to add.
